Upper Marlboro, MD

The town of Upper Marlboro, MD is located in Prince George’s County and is about 20 miles southeast of downtown Washington, D.C. Upper Marlboro has a population of roughly 670 people and covers approximately 0.43 square miles.

John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, an ancestor of Winston Churchill, established in 1706 the town name as “Marlborough Town” In 1744, the town was renamed to Upper Marlborough. The name change is connected to a postal clerk who felt the last three letters “ugh’, did not properly fit the rubber stamps being used at the time.  In 1893, postal guides were referring to the town as Upper Marlboro and the name stuck, despite a proposed ballot to have it changed back in 1968.

In 1706, Marlborough town was accepted as a port town by the Act for the Advancement of Trade and Erecting Ports and Towns. It was asserted that the town would be constructed. County surveyor Thomas Truman Greenfield conducted a survey of 100 acres of the three estates from which the town would be formed. Streets, alleys, a meetinghouse, lots for small business, and 100 lots to be used for homes were laid out. In 1718 residents asked the county government’s general assembly via petition to move the county seat to Upper Marlboro, and the county seat has been there since.
